Qualification of Merchandisers

In apparel industry, a merchandiser is the one who works a middle man or bridge between the buyer and manufacture. A merchandiser has to keep good relation both with buyer and manufacture. As a result, some qualification should be maintained.
  • Should be university graduate or post graduate
  • Should have at least a certificate or diploma in garment merchandising from any reliable institute or person to acquire primary knowledge about actual merchandising in order to build up future career as a professional merchandiser for a higher post
  • Should have good command in spoken and written English so as to interchange news and views in order to motivate buyers and vendors
  • Should have knowledge about garment and textile vocabularies so as to understand buyers’ inquiry mail, purchase order sheet, spec sheet and technical sheet for accurate and efficient communication with buyers
  • Should have enough fluency in spoken English so as to close the conversation quickly
  • Should have enough interpersonal communicative skill and efficiency to convince and manage buyers and vendors
  • Should be computer literate especially on computer application course as in MS word, MS excel, power point, website and internet browsing as well as email receiving and sending so that he/she can smoothly maintain his office activities. If person having knowledge on graphics or graphic designing to be considered as an added qualification
  • Should be smart, dynamic, knowledgeable, skilled, efficient and experienced person
  • Should have goods knowledge about fiber as in: staple fiber, filament fiber conventional or mini fiber, microfiber, ultrafine fiber, yarn as in: blended yarn, non-blended yarn, fabric as in: knit fabric, woven fabric, count as in: yarn count, fabric count, construction as in : yarn construction, fabric construction, dyeing as in: fiber dying, yarn dyeing, fabric dyeing, garments dyeing, printing as in : allover print, screen print, finishing as a fabric finishing, garments finishing, dyes chemicals, colorfastness, garments washing, garment embroidery, textile testing & fabric weight or GSM.
  • Should have clear concept of garments production planning, garments manufacturing process, potential quality problem of garments production, acceptable quality level, follow up and monitoring of quality, productivity, production schedule, shipment schedule, sample development and approval process.
  • Should have good knowledge about customs, shipping, banking, EPB, shipping line, airline, commercial documentations and formalities.
  • Should have clear knowledge about procurement of garments export order or purchase order, sourcing of garment buyers, sourcing of garment raw materials vendors, garment raw materials consumption, garment costing and pricing.
